What IGP is
The Working-Dog Sport, Explained In One Session
IGP — the international working-dog test — is the sport behind the world's best-trained dogs. It has three phases: tracking, where the dog follows a scent trail laid on grass and finds the articles dropped along it; obedience, where the dog works with precision and real enthusiasm — heelwork, positions, retrieves, send-aways; and protection, where the dog learns to engage a decoy in a padded sleeve, with total control, and to let go on command.
Most owners never get near it, because clubs assume you already know what you're doing. The taster fixes that: two hours, one-to-one, and you'll have seen all three phases with your own dog.
Your two hours
How The Session Runs
Nothing is assumed. Scott starts with the dog in front of him and builds each phase from the ground up.
Obedience
“Does my dog have what it takes?”
We start on the field with what your dog already knows and show you what IGP obedience looks like — focus, drive and precision built through play and reward rather than pressure. You'll leave with two or three exercises you can practise at home and a clear read on where your dog's natural strengths are.
Tracking
“My dog just sniffs everything anyway…”
That instinct is exactly what tracking uses. Scott lays a short track, and you'll watch your dog learn to follow it footstep by footstep, nose down, for the reward at the end. This is why we ask you to bring your dog's food and to arrive with them hungry — the first track is paid for in dinner.
Protection
“Isn't that just teaching a dog to bite?”
No — it's the most controlled thing a dog can do. Protection is a game of grip, drive and, above all, letting go when told. With a decoy and a padded sleeve, your dog gets a safe, structured introduction at whatever level suits them, and you get to see what their drive really looks like when it's channelled.
Who The Taster Is For
Book it if…
✓ Your dog is 8 months or older — any breed with energy, a nose and a love of a ball.
✓ You've been curious about IGP, working dogs or dog sport and want to try it properly before committing to a club.
✓ You want to give your dog a job and see what they're really capable of.
Skip it if…
✗ Your dog is under 8 months. Come back when they are — the wait is worth it.
✗ What you actually need is help with a behaviour problem. That's a free Zoom assessment with Scott, not the taster — book that and we'll point you the right way.
✗ You can't get to Suffolk. The session is in person at our base — there's no online version.
How it works
Book, Pick Your Date, Turn Up Hungry
1. Book below. The button takes you to checkout — it takes a minute.
2. Pick your date. Your booking gives you a login to Scott's client area, where you choose a session time that suits you from his live calendar.
3. Watch for a text. Full instructions arrive by text before the day: where to park, what happens when you arrive, and how to get the most out of the two hours.
On the day, bring three things: your dog, a ball they love, and their food — and make sure they arrive hungry. Everything else is here.
What comes next
The taster could open the door to our IGP Club
Some dogs get the bug in the first twenty minutes. If yours is one of them, the taster is the natural first step into our IGP Club, where you train the sport properly with Scott and the other handlers. No pressure either way — plenty of people come for the two hours and leave with a better-trained dog and a great afternoon.
Who You'll Be Training With
Scott McKay is a professional dog trainer who holds a NePoPo® Gold Certification, training working dogs at our base in Suffolk and across Europe. He runs the IGP Club here and works one-to-one with owners and their dogs every week.
The taster is taught by Scott himself — not a junior instructor — so you get a straight read on your dog from someone who does this every day.
